The Super-organism: The Beauty, Elegance, and Strangeness of Insect Societies

Author: B Holldobler, Edward O. Wilson

ISBN: 978-0393067040

Fascinating overview of eusocial insects.

Review

Both authors are veterans in study of eusocial insects and present in this magnificent book an uptodate account of what is known about these animals. This is done in a very readable style, nicely illustrated with graphics and photo's. Every aspect of eusocial insects is covered in depth, from behaviour to signaling and natural history and everything is extensively annotated with links to scientific articles. It is hard to find any fault with this book, except maybe for the fact that termites, bees and wasps are somewhat underrepresented compared to ants. Nevertheless a 5 out of 5 book, no doubt about it.
